Keeping gear from shifting requires a stable arrangement, suitable containment, rated truck bed cargo straps, approved anchors, and routing that controls movement in every direction. Test the load before departure and reinspect it after driving begins.
Follow all equipment-manufacturer instructions. Payload limits and legal requirements vary by vehicle, cargo, jurisdiction, and type of use.
Acceleration, braking, turns, bumps, vibration, airflow, and settling can make cargo slide, roll, tip, bounce, rotate, or lift. Smooth liners, rolling containers, compressible bags, unstable stacks, and poor strap angles increase that risk. A strap across a soft container may also lose effectiveness as the container compresses.
A practical truck-bed securement system may include:
Appropriately rated cargo straps
Manufacturer-rated truck-bed anchor points
Cargo boxes, bins, or other suitable containment
A compatible cargo net or securely fastened tarp for loose material
Edge protection where webbing contacts abrasive surfaces
Non-slip matting where appropriate

NHTSA advises tying cargo down, securing large objects directly, avoiding overloading, covering loose loads where appropriate, and double-checking before driving. NHTSA secure-load guidance.
A mat, tarp, tonneau cover, tailgate, cargo bar, or net may assist but does not automatically replace rated restraints. Weather protection is a separate task; see weatherproofing cargo for long trips.
Before attaching straps, confirm payload capacity and follow the owner’s manual for weight placement. Truck designs, axle limits, and beds differ, so no position suits every heavy object.
Use these general principles:
Keep heavy items low and stable.
Distribute weight according to the vehicle manufacturer’s guidance.
Separate fragile items from heavy tools or equipment.
Group small items inside suitable containers.
Avoid tall or unstable stacks.
Keep approved anchors accessible.
Do not rely on the tailgate as the only restraint.

Identify whether each item can slide, roll, tip, bounce, compress, or lift.
Check payload and approved-anchor ratings, including relevant cargo, passenger, and accessory weight as directed by the manufacturer.
Place cargo low and stable. Never balance heavy gear on bags, cartons, or collapsible containers.
Contain tools and small gear in suitable bins. Use a compatible net or secured tarp for material that could escape.

Use approved, rated anchors and fully seat every hook so it cannot rotate free.
Oppose movement from acceleration, braking, turns, and bumps. One top strap may not control forward or sideways motion.
Tension progressively, keep webbing flat, and avoid crushing cargo or deformable lids.
Control excess webbing so it cannot flap, drag, obscure lights, or contact hot or moving parts.
Push from several directions. Correct containment, anchors, routing, or tension if the load moves independently.
Stop safely after driving begins; recheck again after rough roads, sudden braking, or changed conditions.
Routing should oppose expected movement. Direct restraint connects a stable load point to an approved anchor; opposing straps may control multiple directions. Cross-strap only when the load, anchors, and instructions support it.
The webbing should:
Contact a stable part of the load
Avoid weak lids and compressible corners
Remain flat and untwisted
Stay clear of sharp, hot, and moving components
Use edge protection where abrasion or cutting is possible
Keep hooks fully engaged
Pull in directions that resist expected movement

Use approved anchors with known ratings—not plastic trim, tailgate cables, sheet-metal holes, or unverified accessories.

WLL is the usable rating to evaluate. Breaking strength is a test-based failure threshold, not normal working capacity.

Overloading the pickup

Depending only on the tailgate
Using one strap for multidirectional movement
Strapping across weak or compressible packaging
Leaving boxes, buckets, or tools individually unsecured
Allowing twisted webbing or partially engaged hooks

Overtightening delicate cargo
Leaving strap tails loose
Treating a tarp or tonneau cover as the entire system
Failing to recheck after driving

The best straps match the cargo weight, shape, movement risk, anchors, routing, and required WLL. M500 is TorkStrap’s primary everyday truck-bed option; heavier applications may justify HD750 or PRO.
There is no universal number. Use enough properly configured restraints to control every relevant movement direction, following the truck, cargo, anchor, and strap manufacturers’ instructions.
Required WLL depends on cargo weight, strap quantity, attachment method, angles, anchors, and movement direction. Do not select a system from breaking strength or cargo weight alone.
Use factory or manufacturer-approved anchors with known ratings. Avoid plastic trim, tailgate cables, sheet-metal holes, and unverified accessories.
